The series is designed for the Movement professional who is ready to take their treatment skill set to the next level. If school is book-smart, Movement Academy is Street smart.

Pain Science: Derrick Sueki PT, PhD

August 14, 2022, 3-5pm Central Time

Derrick Sueki, PT, DPT, Ph.D., GCPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation on associative learning and the role of memory, trauma, and injury on pain, cardiovagal, and motor responses. Since 1999, he has been a primary instructor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Mount Saint Mary’s University, and in 2015 he accepted a professorship in the Department of Physical Therapy at Azusa Pacific University. Sueki is a chief editor of two orthopedic textbooks and has authored numerous works in textbooks and peer-reviewed journals. He is serving as chair for the Orthopedic Specialty Council, and on the California State Physical Therapy Association’s Research Council. Since 2001, he has been a primary therapist for the Association of Volleyball Professionals, and serves as their Southern California Medical Coordinator. Sueki is a certified orthopedic clinical specialist, a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists, and specializes in the science and management of chronic pain.

Swimming Injuries: Joyce Shahboz, PT

Lecture is September 11, 3-5pm Central Time

Joyce Shahboz, PT, CSCS  has been working in outpatient orthopaedic and sports clinics since graduating from the University of Florida (1995) with specific interests in combining manual therapy, movement correction and exercise training. 
Her interests in swimming increased after swimming under Master’s coach, Jim Miller, MD, who was also a team physician for USA Swimming and would later consult for FINA.  In 2007, she started a dry land and strength training program for an elite level age group swim team that was started by Mike Davidson, member of the New Zealand Olympic team and Alabama SEC championship team. She eventually became a Level 1 USA Swim coach, was an on pool deck therapist for the US National Team at a US open swim meet, a member of the USA Swimming Sports Medicine and Science Network and participated in a medical team rotation in Sports Performances for the USOC at the Colorado OTC.
Over the last 2 decades, she has worked with elite junior, senior and national/international level swimmers and coaches as well as athletes from other disciplines. Her oldest daughter swims for the University of Florida with another daughter currently in the recruiting process.     

Her own personal interests in strength training and movement efficiency started while training in martial arts while completing her undergraduate degree. She then ventured into triathlons, mountain biking and over the decades, led her to Ninja Warrior, rock climbing and aerial/circus arts.

Peripheral Nerve Injuries: Tara Ruppert OT, CHT

Lecture: October 2, 2022 from 3-5pm Central Time

Tara Ruppert is an occupational therapist (OT) and certified hand therapist (CHT) with 20 years of experience.  She earned a post-professional OTD from George Washington University in 2017.  Her career started in school-based pediatrics in 2000, then moved into outpatient rehab by 2003.  She obtained the CHT specialization in 2008 and worked in outpatient clinics from 2007 to 2015, treating a wide variety of upper extremity orthopedic issues and working with multiple hand surgeons throughout Omaha.   She transitioned into teaching in the occupational therapy program at the College of Saint Mary in 2015, where she currently teaches courses like Principles of Kinesiology, Upper Extremity Rehabilitation, and Physical Agent Modalities.  In addition to teaching, she returned to part-time clinical work at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in 2017, where she mentors other OT’s and covers Hand Clinic.  Tara grew up in Omaha, has been married for 17 years, and has 8 children (3 with two-legs, 5 with four-legs).

Shoulder and the Hanging Athlete: Emily Scherb, PT, DPT

Dr. Emily Scherb is a physical therapist specializing in circus and performing arts medicine. Through her almost 30 years of training and working in the circus arts she has gained deep insight on how circus bodies work in the air and on the ground. Emily now teaches workshops for circus artists, instructors, and healthcare providers with the mission of improving health and safety in circus training and performance. Her bestselling book Applied Anatomy of Aerial Arts was published in 2018.

The Gymnastic Athlete: Danielle Ivie, PT, DPT

Dr. Ivie has been fascinated with human movement since starting gymnastics at a young age. With fifteen years of competitive gymnastics experience, including Division 1 Gymnastics at the University of Arizona, she has a strong passion for the incredible resilience of the human body, specifically related to injury and return to performance. Hip pain and the Dancer: Amy Werner, PT

Jan 8, 2023, 3-5pm Central 

Amy Werner, PT, DPT, has over a decade of experience working with student and professional dancers. Dr. Werner is the Director of Dance Medicine at New Heights Physical Therapy Plus in Portland, Oregon, where she spends her days treating dancers from 30+ schools and professional companies. In Portland, she is the primary physical therapist for NeuroTour, the professional organization that supports traveling Broadway productions. Dr. Werner previously served as the Care Coordinator for The Oregon Ballet Theatre, the largest professional ballet company in Oregon. In this role, she administered pre-season injury assessments and oversaw a studio based health and wellness program. Additionally, she provided on-site dancer health screens for the students of Oregon Ballet Theatre School. Dr. Werner hosts dance wellness events at her clinic, providing injury screening and workshops about dancer health to professional dancers, parents and educators. Dr. Werner is a consultant with The Ellové Technique®, a cross-training class that is taught nationally in dance studios.  She, and a representative from Ellové, co-presented at the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS) conference in Montreal, Canada about integrating dance injury prevention, fitness and recovery techniques within the dance studio. Dr. Werner has previously presented at Dance and Drill Coaches Association of Oregon (DDCA) and Oregon Dance Education Organization (ODEO).

Back pain and the Fitness Athlete: Anita Connors, PT

Live Lecture: February 5, 2023 3-5pm Central

Anita is an FCAMPT physiotherapist based in Halifax, NS. She works in orthopaedic private practice and owns 3 small clinics around HRM. She has been teaching in the Atlantic provinces since 2011 in a variety of roles. These roles include clinical instructor with Dalhousie School of Physiotherapy, creating and teaching private courses, mentoring physiotherapy students and CAMPT residents as well as instructing in the Orthopaedic Division AIM courses. Anita is co creator of a running assessment and treatment course that has been delivered in HRM, Newfoundland and PEI.

Her background is in manual therapy, movement pattern assessment, movement correction, load management, and management of the running, barbell and functional fitness athlete.

 Anita approaches treatment as an opportunity to help people move better and stay moving for life. She is an advocate for strength training for all ages and assessing how people move as a big picture. Then, when needed will utilize manual therapy and manipulation to facilitate better movement and pain management. 

She is a competitive masters CrossFit athlete, runner and olympic weightlifter with a special interest in treating athletes of all levels from these disciplines.

Pelvic Floor and the Orthopedic Therapist: Laurel Proulx PT, PhD

Live Lecture: March 5, 2023 3-5pm CST

Dr. Laurel Proulx is a pelvic therapist, educator, and researcher. She received her B.S. in Kinesiology from the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk!) in 2009. She then attended Regis University, where she was awarded her DPT in 2013. Most recently, she has successfully defended her dissertation and achieved her Ph.D. at Texas Woman’s University in 2021. Laurel returned to Regis University prior to the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year as an assistant professor in the Rueckert-Hartman College of Health Professions.  Dr Proulx is also the owner of Fem PT and Performance.

Elbow and its application to throwers: Eric Schoenberg, PT

Eric Schoenberg is the owner of Diamond Physical Therapy located inside Cressey Sports Performance in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. CSP is a world class baseball training facility working with professional, college, and high school players. Eric has developed a niche in the rehabilitation and return to play programming for baseball players.  He uses his knowledge of posture and movement to determine why an individual is experiencing pain or limitation in sport or life.

Principles of Strength Training: Matt Foster PT, DPT

Live lecture is May 7, 2023 from 3-5pm Central

Matt Foster, PT, DPT is a graduate of the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program at Washington University in St. Louis, MO in the class of 2015. Prior to physical therapy school, he graduated from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville with his Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Wellness. He has developed his skills in both the realms of strength of conditioning and rehabilitation while working for Memorial Medical Center’s SportsCare, a hybrid facility in Springfield, IL which provides services of rehabilitation and performance training for athletes. He now is the Lead Physical Therapist for Barnes Jewish West County Hospital’s Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation (STAR) in Chesterfield, MO. Matt’s past experiences include training and competing in competitive powerlifting.

Modern Concussion Management: Bobby Lee, PT, DPT

Live lecture: June 4, 2023 3-5pm Central

Bobby Jean Lee, PT, DPT, FAAOMPT, SCS, OCS, CSCS, USAW is a Physical Therapy Clinical Specialist at Texas Health Sports Medicine (THSM) and Texas Christian University Athletics Department (TCU). She is the Clinical Outcomes Research Clinician and Team Lead for the Concussion Management Program at THSM. She is also Co-Owner of Clinic to Field Physical Therapy, a continuing education company specializing in Concussion Management. She graduated from California Lutheran University in 2011 with a B.S. in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine and Duke University in 2014 with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy. She then completed a Sports Physical Therapy Residency at Ben Hogan Sports Medicine and a Manual Therapy Fellowship Program through the Institute for Athlete Regeneration (IAR). Bobby teaches as part of the Physical Therapy and Athletic Training Residency Programs at THSM and is faculty for the IAR Manual Therapy Fellowship. She is the current Vice Chair for the Concussion SIG for the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy. Bobby has been published in peer-reviewed journals and has been invited as a speaker at numerous local, state, and national conferences in sports medicine.

Foot/Ankle pain and Running: Judy Gelber PT, DPT

Dr Gelber is a board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist. Her background in Foot & Ankle and Running comes from her role in the Running clinic while on faculty at Washington University in St Louis program in physical therapy (2008-2016), at Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha working with runners aged 12-21 (2016-2019), and with her practice, Forward Movement Analysis & Rehabilitation (2017-present), through which she treats athletes and provides continuing medical education for physios and athletic trainers.
